A fashion collaboration with Smockshop is set to unveil this September–here;s a lime shoulder piece by Sumi Ink Club to be incorporated into one of Michelle Brunnick’s designs.
A sneak peek at some of the custom garments that Sumi Ink Club is working on for Smockshop.

We painted all day and into the night joined by many Sumi Ink Club members, old and new. Our conclusion–the future of transportation looks ancient, lots of walking and brooms.

The bottom tier of the mural is now complete. Now all that remains are the upper canopy and the middle section. We will reconvene saturday afternoon from 4-8pm and sunday from 12-6 to paint. Everyone is welcome to join in and add to the mural. Sumi Ink Club is all ages, all humans, all styles. The theme is the future of transportation.

The mural is getting denser and denser. We were joined by many amazing new members of sumi ink club–including Victor, a man who moved to America just two days prior. Painting a mural on the theme of future transportation is a pretty promising way to spend your third day in the United States. Welcome.
The door is open–anyone who would like to add to the mural is handed a brush and a cup of paint.

It seems that almost everyone in the neighborhood has dropped by to lend a hand on this mural, from age 8 on up. An amazing woman named Summer even got out of her car during rush hour to paint a “solar express” train on the wall and two acrobatic climbers, Amanda and Michael, calmly conquered the outward edges of the upper painting platform. We are 100% blown away by the collective progress of the mural and the community spirit we’ve encountered this week. Day 2 marks another glorious day of sumi in Los Angeles.

Sumi Ink Club launched a collaborative mural project this morning. SIC will cover the facade of our studio at SiteLA 2522 Sunset Blvd. in Los Angeles with collaborative drawings over the next week. Everyone and anyone passing by is welcome to grab a brush and add to the mural. Our theme is THE FUTURE OF TRANSPORTATION. Thanks so much to the many helping hands who joined sumi ink club for day 1 of the mural project : Cameron, Jazz, Isabelle, Denise, and Luke. Cameron was even bold enough to join me on the highest scaffolding, high in the air above sunset blvd. SO BOLD SO BEAUTIFUL WE ARE READY FOR THE FUTURE.

Another beautiful day of sumis. We took it to the limit, drawing for around six hours non-stop with new members Seth of Highland Park and John of New York City. This giant drawing on linen will become a wearable work of art available at Smockshop in Chinatown.

Here at the Los Angeles sumi-headquarters we are totally floored by these photographs just sent in from the Williamsburg, Brooklyn Sumi Ink CLub organized by Denise Schatz and her students at PS 19. These drawings take our breath away. We’ll try to step it up over here on the west coast–because the work being done by these young brooklyn artists is totally amazing:

Thank You Islands Fold, Cantab Publishing, The Holster, and Seems for providing the Subliminal Projects book case with some new materials.
Today we were graced by the presence of some bold new members of sumi ink club: two drummers butchy and aaron, a painter named Akira, as well as representatives from Toyota’s Heya community. What a mix! We’re working busily on hand-painted fabrics for a new line of sumi smocks designed by the Smockshop. Who will wear these incredible one of a kind pieces? A fancy lady or a beach bum? See if you can find Butchy’s hieroglyphic hamburger.

Sumi Ink Club and Smockshop will collaborate on a line of one-of-a-kind sumi smocks, designed by Michelle Brunnick and Kate Hilseth and handpainted by the Sumi Ink CLub.
A smock is a simple wrap-around garment based on a pattern designed by artist, Andrea Zittel, and can be worn as a dress, tunic, or cape. The possibilities are endless. The new line of Sumi Smocks is set to be unveiled late August-early September 2008. We are in the workshop drawing non-stop until then.
Last night Sumi Ink CLub covered over a yard of fabric with intricate all-over drawings and patterns. We plan to photograph the final one-of-a-kind textiles and present the drawings in the form of a book in addition to the line of 5-10 exquisite, bold sumi garments. Sumi Smock pre-orders are accepted, contact the smockshop for details.
