Last night Sumi Ink CLub and Smockshop teamed up for an awesome evening of collaboration that included the unveiling of a beautiful collection of sumi smocks designed by Chose General and Kate Hillseth and an on site collaborative drawing session. The results of last night’s sumi session will be sewn into a new one of a kind garment, drawn by many hands.
This drawing will appear on the new Lucky Dragons Australian tour T-shirt. Lucky Dragons and Sumi Ink Club are traveling down under on the day of the equinox, passing from summer to autumn to spring in one swoop. Amazing planet!
If you are headed to the East of Eden exhibition this weekend there will be a Fresh Pressed silkscreen station where you can print your own sumi ink club T-shirt or print. Thanks to Junc Gallery and Fresh Pressed!!!
East of Eden will focus on contributions of Los Angeles galleries, the cultures from which they draw inspiration and the eastside of L.A. as an important source for contemporary art.
This will be a unique opportunity for patrons, collectors and the public to view and purchase exemplary new works by emerging and established artists who are indicative of the significant contemporary art being fostered in this region. While there is no over arching critical doctrine that unites them philosophically, all the participating galleries are representative of new generation of determining gallery culture and share in an inherent formative energy that has resulted in a significant strain of art in Los Angeles.
The event is free to the public and the Saturday night gala will be a multi gallery event with a portion of the art sales being donated to The MOCA Contemporaries, a volunteer fundraising support council of The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA). The three-day exhibition will also include guest curated project spaces, lectures and interactive workshops for children and adults.

What a lovely evening it will be. Everyone is welcome: all ages, all humans, all styles.
Sumi Ink Club collaborated with smockshop on a series of one-of-a-kind garments designed by Michelle Brunnick and Kate Hillseth. Can’t wait to see these sumis on the street, worn by fashionable ladies and gentlemen. The line is tentatively set to unveil on Sept 19 at the smockshop in Chinatown (LA).
The Sumi Ink Club Mural on the corner of Sunset Blvd. and Rampart Ave. in Silverlake (L.A.) is now complete. It took six days to do, with tiny brushes and over 50 participants.

We held a lovely sumi session with Tim Lowly’s advanced painting class at North Park University on Tuesday afternoon. First ever sumi session preceeded by a full explanation of how sumi ink club works + slide lecture of past projects. We were excited to talk a bit about the recent and not so recent history of collaborative art and to share the work of some of our favorite artists: CoBrA, niki de st. phalle, jean tinguely, gelitin, relational aesthetics, learning to love you more, paper rad, harrell fletcher, shobo shobo, and many more. Sumi Ink Club held a special colorful session at one of our favorite spots in Chicago, Golden Age. We were joined by many new chicago friends–thanks to everyone who contributed to these drawings. We would like to publish a little book, and Marco suggested that Golden Age may turn the drawings into a flag to hang above the entryway of the store. The drawings will be on display live and in real life at Golden Age for a little while if you are walking by.
